Arbor Day

PictureRiverwalk Park Chair Jean Mooney presents the Arbor Day plaque to Jaque, Bill and Bob Higgs.
Another distinguished citizen was honored March 7 at the Arbor Day Ceremony. An oak tree was planted in memory of lifelong San Marcos resident Willie Higgs, a veteran of the Battle of Iwo Jima. Higgs was remembered as a storyteller, choral director, entertainer, teacher and successful businessman who touched many lives. Sharing in the program were John Serur, one of Higgs’ former students; Mark Newton, his pastor for many years at First Baptist, San Marcos; Allan Hamlin, Higgs’ brother-in-law; and Al Barlow, a co-entertainer with Higgs at the Outdoor Medicine Show in Wimberley.
