Heritage Association History

2018-2019

In 2018, the Guild faced the challenge of operating under stricter local food codes. Host groups adjusted by preparing food on site at the Cock House or partnering with restaurants to provide the meals. Guild members also honored one of the original Heritage founders, Virginia Moore, by naming the back room of the Cock House in her memory. In Veramendi Plaza, the Merriman Cabin committee designed and installed an interpretive sign near the cabin. Toward the end of the year, the Riverwalk Park Committee joined with the San Marcos Police Department in paying tribute to SMPD Officer Kenneth M. Copeland, who was killed in the line of duty in 2017. The committee dedicated a tree by the San Marcos Activity Center in memory of Officer Copeland.

In addition to all the annual Heritage events in 2019, including the “Rooms with a View” Tour of Homes, Heritage members enjoyed three just-for-fun socials. One took place in March at the Old Fish Hatchery, where Brian Olson talked about the San Marcos River. Another was held at the Meadows Center, where members boarded a glass-bottomed boat. The final event was a Halloween-themed gathering at the San Marcos Cemetery, where old and young alike enjoyed ghoulish treats and crafts. As the year drew to a close, the city installed a new wood shingle roof on the Cock House and the Guild added an interpretive sign, created by Alison Tudor.
