Heritage Association History
1991-1997
In 1991, the Hays County Historical Commission was given partial funding to support the writing of a nomination of the Courthouse Square to the National Register, with listing resulting in 1992.
In 1993, complete restoration of the outdoor Carpenter Gothic Chapel in the San Marcos Cemetery, was authentically carried out with the assistance of the Heritage Association through a generous contribution of $9,500.
The Heritage Guild responsibly cares for the Charles S. Cock House Museum through the Cottage Kitchen Friday luncheons. The Guild has been a major source of income for the Heritage Association since 1976 due to the publication of several cookbooks, along with the luncheons.
The Heritage Association sponsored the “20th Anniversary Tours of Distinction” in the Spring of 1994. Lighting for the Riverwalk was completed and the grounds around the Museum were re-landscaped in time for the Anniversary Tours. Preservation tours of Old San Marcos, beginning at The Charles S. Cock House, have resulted in increasing tourism attention for the city.
In 1994, the Board of Directors donated $2,000 towards the initial measured drawings for the restoration of the Old First Baptist Church on Martin Luther King Drive. In August of 1995, another $5,000 was contributed to the Preservation Committee.
In December of 1995, the Heritage Association assisted with the illumination of parkland in San Marcos with a grant of $3,500, and also contributed $5,000 to the San Marcos River Foundation.
In 1996, the Charles S. Cock House Museum received a new roof and structural repairs were completed through grants from the Heritage Association and the city. A new Heritage cookbook titled “Twenty Years in the Cottage Kitchen” was published and was marketed statewide.
In 1997, the Association repaired the floor and foundation to the Charles S. Cock House Museum. Also this year the Association instituted the Holiday Home Tour to showcase homes decorated for the holidays and implemented the Valentine’s Day “Chocolate Covered Strawberry and Rose” fund raiser.
