In 2025, Heritage members and their guests are invited to three History Happy Hours hosted by the Membership Committee on these dates: May 15, August 21, November 20 Each HHH event will feature a speaker addressing a pertinent historical topic. These events are free of charge and are scheduled from 5-7 p.m. at the Ulysses Cephas House, 217 Martin Luther King Drive. The events include wine and appetizers along with the lecture. MAY 15 - MOVIE TIME! Celebrate Mermaid Week in San Marcos by remembering Aquarena Springs with its crystal clear waters and glass bottom boats. Enjoy Hill Country Reporter’s magical documentary “Aquarena Springs and Ralph the Swimming Pig: Diary of a Texas Treasure.” Located on the oldest continually inhabited site in North America, Aquarena was the #2 tourist attraction in Texas. Enjoy wine, appetizers and popcorn at this nostalgic event.
AUGUST 21- HISTORICAL MYSTERY KILLER! Texas’ first serial killer was a historical mystery and saucy 1920’s charmer from right here in San Marcos. Peggy Jones, Heritage member and owner of Wineaux (314 E. Hutchison Street), did some extensive research on this haunting saga and recently published the captivating story “Mourning Mistress.” Peggy will share the tale and at this month's History Happy Hour. Attendees will have an opportunity to buy her book and have Peggy sign it.
NOVEMBER 21 - VERNACULAR ARCHITECTURE Texas State University history professor Peter Dedek gave a fascinating presentation last May on the many types of vernacular architecture in our seven historic districts. Many members have urged a second speaking engagement since inclement weather prevented attendance last spring. Whether it’s Eastlake, Beaux Arts, or Queen Anne, you’ll want to know how to preserve your home’s unique design and historical charm. Bring a notepad!
