Heritage Association History
2003-2005
The year 2003 marked the first installment of the “Town and Country Tour: A Trilogy,” combining a tour of historic homes and newer, contemporary homes for the first time. The Merriman Cabin committee acquired several period pieces of furniture for the doctor's log home with funds raised from the sale of raffle tickets to the Jack C. Hays bronze maquette (small scale model). A ribbon-cutting and dedication for the completed restoration of the cabin was held in November 2003, and the winner of the raffle was announced.
In 2004, more furnishings were added to the little log museum. Several tours were conducted for school children as well as out-of-state tour groups. Texas State University-San Marcos History Department students volunteered to serve as docents on a regular basis at the cabin museum. The cabin and the Charles S. Cock House Museum were open to the public for all three nights of Sights and Sounds of Christmas. Hundreds of people came through each night. The Board contributed $2,000 to the San Marcos Cemetery Association to help prune and clean ball moss from the magnificent, old Live Oak trees.
A “Brick” project took off in 2004, led by the Riverwalk/Park Beautification Committee of Heritage. Memorial bricks were sold as a fund raiser to replace the walkways in front of the Charles S. Cock House Museum. This represented phase one of the project to replace and repair all the broken-up walkways in Veramendi Plaza. “Heritage Home Tour: A Trilogy, Part II” continued in 2004 and became one of the most successful Heritage tours ever held. Over $10,000 was raised from the tour to help the brick project and more.
Cock House renovations were completed in 2005. The house was closed for five months in order to replace the old roof, enlarge the kitchen and add a handicapped accessible restroom. The committee came in under budget and was able to open the house again on December 9, 2005. Also in 2005, the Heritage Association developed a new fund raiser, the Heritage Ball. The inaugural class had seven members, who were introduced at the Spring Preview Party. The group included Kate Cohen, Michelle Crunk, Sarah Kate Dillon, Rachel Christine Jorgenson, Anna Rash, Kristen Scott and Tiffany Wallis. The second phase of the “Brick” project continued. The addition was led by the Riverwalk/Park Beautification Committee. “Heritage Home Tour: A Trilogy, Part III” was a continued success.
