Heritage Association Tours of Distinction to Feature ‘True Women’ Locales, History & More
Plans for the 39th annual Heritage Association of San Marcos’ Tours of Distinction are well underway with this year’s focus on the history and locations chronicled by author Janet Woods Windle in her “True Women” series. Woods family homes along with other historic places connected with the early San Marcos family will be included in the two-day Tour event coming up on May 3 and 4 in downtown San Marcos and beyond.
“Grit and Grace: The Purposeful Combination that Built our Community” is the theme of the Tour activities, which will include tours of 4 different historic homes related to the Woods’ family, historic reenactments, talks on growing up in San Marcos, and an art show and sale. A separate brunch in a private garden with Woods Windle, a book signing by the author and discounted, package-priced tickets are also new among the highlights planned.
All totaled more than a dozen locations will be featured on the Tour and this year. For those who enjoy seeing holiday décor, the May Tour tickets may be combined with a one-day San Marcos Holiday Home Tour slated for Sunday, Dec. 7 all for one low price of $20 in advance. (Individual tickets will be sold at $15 per event.) Tickets to the private brunch with the author will be sold separately for $35; seating is limited to 50 individuals.
“The Heritage Association’s Tour Committee is looking at new ways to enhance the Tour experience this year,” said Ann DuPont, Home Tour Chair. “In addition to placing more focus on the history behind the homes featured, we wanted to provide more ways for folks of all ages to interact with the places and the history so there’s truly something for everyone this year,” she adds.
In addition to the four historic homes that will be included on the tour, the Hays County Jail, the recently renovated Cephas House and Eddie Durham Park will be home to a series of activities as well. Tour goers can enjoy a USO-style party with a jazz ensemble while sipping on a root beer float in the park, listening to presentations in the nearby historic building and a chance to purchase local art at Art Squared’s street-side art fair slated to be set-up between the Jail and the Calaboose Museum and the Cephas House.
The historic Merriman Cabin will feature a reenactment of early San Marcos life by Wonderland School’s 4th and 5th grade classes.
